Should all future rockets be designed to be reusable?

Reusable rockets have transformed the space industry, but I do not believe that every future rocket should be reusable. To start with, reusability is not always the most efficient choice. A rocket that must land again needs to save extra fuel for the return trip, which reduces the weight it can carry. For heavy spacecraft or missions to distant planets, a single-use rocket can sometimes deliver more on each launch. Furthermore, reuse only saves money when a rocket flies many times. Recovering, inspecting and repairing a booster requires special ships, facilities and skilled workers. For a country that launches only a few rockets a year, these costs may be higher than simply building a new rocket. That is why different designs suit different needs. In conclusion, reusable rockets should certainly be encouraged, but they should not be the only option.

I do not think all rockets must be reusable. First, a reusable rocket needs extra fuel to come back, so it can carry less. Some big missions need a lot of power. Second, catching and checking used rockets costs money. Special ships and many workers are needed. For countries with only a few launches a year, a new rocket can be cheaper. Each kind is good for different jobs, so we need both kinds of rockets.

  • Reusable rockets greatly reduce launch costs, which makes space more accessible to universities, small companies and developing countries.
  • Throwing away a whole rocket after one flight wastes valuable materials, so reuse is better for the environment.1
