I do not agree that rocket launches should be restricted for environmental reasons. Firstly, the pollution caused by rockets is very small compared with other human activities. If we want to reduce emissions, cars, factories and airplanes are far more important targets. Secondly, rockets carry satellites that actually help protect the environment. Weather satellites, climate satellites and other Earth observation satellites give us the information we need to fight global warming and respond to natural disasters. Restricting launches would therefore slow down environmental research itself. Of course, engineers should keep developing cleaner fuels, and some rockets already use liquid hydrogen, which produces mainly water when it burns. On balance, however, the benefits of launches are much greater than their environmental costs.
