Although there is no proof yet, I think it is very likely that intelligent life exists somewhere else in the universe. My first reason is the enormous size of the universe. Our galaxy alone contains more than a hundred billion stars, and there are countless other galaxies. Over the past thirty years, astronomers have confirmed thousands of planets around other stars, and it now seems that most stars have planets. With so many possible homes, it would be surprising if Earth were the only place where life became intelligent. My second reason is that the ingredients of life are common. Water and organic molecules have been detected in many places in space, and life appeared on Earth fairly soon after conditions allowed it. If life starts easily, intelligence may develop on at least some worlds over billions of years. We have not heard from anyone yet, but I believe we are probably not alone.
