I disagree with the idea that the search for dark matter should be abandoned. The first reason is that the evidence for dark matter is very strong, even though we do not know what it is. Galaxies spin so fast that they would fly apart if only visible matter were holding them together, and light from distant galaxies is bent more than ordinary matter can explain. Ignoring a mystery this large would mean accepting that we do not understand most of the matter in the universe. The second reason is that a long search is normal in science. Gravitational waves were predicted about a hundred years before they were finally detected in 2015. Each experiment that finds nothing still rules out some possibilities and guides the next step. Scientists are now mapping dark matter with new telescopes such as Euclid. Therefore, giving up now would be a serious mistake.
