I do not think Pluto should be called a planet again. To start with, scientific categories should be based on clear rules rather than on tradition or emotion. In 2006, astronomers defined a planet as a body that orbits the Sun, is large enough to be nearly round, and has cleared other objects from its path. Pluto shares its region of space with many other icy bodies, so it does not meet the third condition. Furthermore, if Pluto were a planet, several similar objects would also have to be counted. Eris, discovered in 2005, is about the same size as Pluto, and there may be many more such worlds far from the Sun. Children could end up memorizing dozens of planets, which would make the word much less useful. Pluto is still a fascinating world, as the New Horizons mission showed, but the label dwarf planet describes it more accurately.
