Returning humans to the Moon costs a great deal, but I do not consider it a waste of money. To start with, the Moon is the best place to prepare for longer journeys. These lessons will be necessary if humans ever travel to Mars. Furthermore, a human presence on the Moon allows scientists to make discoveries that machines may miss. During the Apollo missions, astronauts carefully selected rocks that are still teaching us about the history of the Earth and the Moon. Trained people can make quick decisions and adapt to surprises in ways that robots cannot yet match. In short, sending humans back to the Moon is a valuable investment in science and in humanity's future.
