Mining the Moon and asteroids may sound like science fiction, but it could become reality this century. In my view, private companies should not be given ownership of the resources they extract, at least not without strict international rules. First, space belongs to all humankind. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 states that no nation can claim the Moon or other celestial bodies as its own territory. If companies from a few rich countries could simply take valuable materials, such as water ice near the lunar South Pole, the benefits of space would be shared very unequally. Second, a first come, first served system could cause serious conflicts. Companies might race to grab the best locations and ask their governments to protect them. Instead, resources should be managed under an international framework that guarantees fair access for all countries. Only then can space mining benefit everyone.

I do not think companies should own the things they dig up on the Moon. First, the Moon belongs to everyone. An international treaty says that no country can own it. So companies should not own it either. Second, if companies can take whatever they find, only rich countries will get the benefits, and countries may start to fight. We need fair rules for everyone first.
