Some people argue that space budgets should be redirected to problems such as poverty and hunger. However, I do not think this is a good idea. To begin with, space exploration itself helps solve problems on Earth. Satellites observe droughts, floods and crop conditions, and this information allows governments and aid groups to send food and support to the right places quickly. Without space technology, many humanitarian efforts would be much less effective. In addition, the amount of money involved is smaller than many people imagine. In the United States, NASA receives less than one percent of the federal budget. Even if all of this money were moved to social programs, it would not end poverty, because the causes of poverty are complex and often political. In conclusion, rather than choosing between space and Earth, we should recognize that investing in space is also a way of caring for our planet.
