Joto kaiwai began with a dating reality show featuring a former egg model and a model from its sister magazine nuts. The phrase itself spread from posts by the nuts model, and people began using it on social media. They now apply it to someone's looks, character or general mood. The publisher said the joto attitude itself became a big boom.

Second place went to frenemy, a blend of the English words friend and enemy. It describes a person who seems friendly but is secretly an enemy. Bari kimazui, meaning extremely awkward, came third after spreading through TikTok and other videos. In fourth was dopagaki, a joking label people use for themselves when they keep watching short videos to get the next thrill.

The survey used an online form and ran from September 28 to October 2. The editors also studied social media trends before making their own final choice. The release did not say how many people answered.
