滅とは？意味と使い方　女子高生94人の調査で今年いちばん使った言葉1位

A survey in Japan says the word high school girls used most this year was metsu. JK Lab, a group run by the company nowWnow, asked 94 high school girls about new words. It released the results on October 31.

日本の調査によると、今年、女子高生がいちばん使った言葉は「滅」でした。nowWnow という会社が運営する「JKラボ」が、女子高生94人に新しい言葉についてたずねました。結果は10月31日に発表されました。

About 31 percent of the girls chose metsu. Dopagaki came second, with 16 percent. It was also the top answer for words the girls see on social media but do not use.

約31％の女子高生が「滅」を選びました。2位は「ドパガキ」で、16％でした。ドパガキは、SNSで見るけれど自分では使わない言葉でも1位でした。

People use metsu when their feelings are very strong. For example, suki sugite metsu means you like someone so much that the feeling is too strong. The phrase comes from the title of a song by the group MILK.

「滅」は、気持ちがとても強いときに使います。たとえば「好きすぎて滅」は、だれかを好きな気持ちが強すぎて、もう受け止めきれないという意味です。この言い方は、M!LK というグループの曲の題名から生まれました。

About 28 percent of the girls also think metsu will win Japan's award for new words this year. The list of words for the award usually comes out in early November.

約28％の女子高生は、今年の「新語・流行語大賞」も「滅」がとると予想しています。この賞の候補の言葉は、ふつう11月の初めに発表されます。

The word Japanese high school girls used most this year was metsu, according to a survey released on October 31. JK Lab, a research and media group run by the company nowWnow, asked 94 of its high school members to write their answers in an online form from October 20 to 22. Metsu was named by 29 of them, or 30.9 percent.

10月31日に発表された調査によると、今年、日本の女子高生がいちばん使った言葉は「滅」でした。nowWnow という会社が運営する調査・メディアの組織「JKラボ」が、10月20日から22日に、メンバーの女子高生94人にオンラインのフォームで答えを書いてもらいました。「滅」をあげたのは、そのうち29人、つまり30.9％でした。

The word is used when feelings rise sharply, as in suki sugite metsu, which describes liking someone so much that it becomes too much to handle. It started as part of a song title by the group MILK. In a separate survey by the company Mynavi, released in June, the pattern topped the words category with 50.7 percent of 610 girls aged 13 to 19.

この言葉は、気持ちが大きく動いたときに使われます。たとえば「好きすぎて滅」は、だれかを好きな気持ちが大きすぎて、受け止めきれなくなることを表します。もとは、M!LK というグループの曲の題名の一部でした。マイナビが6月に発表した別の調査でも、13〜19歳の女子610人のうち50.7％が選び、この言い方が「コトバ」の部門で1位でした。

Second place in the new survey went to dopagaki, at 16.0 percent, followed by frenemy, at 9.6 percent. Dopagaki, short for a Japanese phrase meaning a kid hooked on dopamine, describes someone who cannot stay away from short videos and social media. Yet dopagaki also ranked first, at 17.0 percent, when the girls were asked which words they see on social media but do not actually say. It also topped the list of words the girls think adults would not understand, with 27.7 percent.

今回の調査の2位は16.0％の「ドパガキ」、3位は9.6％の「フレネミー」でした。「ドパガキ」は「ドーパミン中毒のガキ」を短くした言葉で、ショート動画やSNSから離れられない状態を表します。ところがドパガキは、「SNSで見るけれど実際には使わない言葉」をたずねた質問でも17.0％で1位でした。大人には意味が伝わらないと思う言葉でも、27.7％で1位でした。

The members also tried to predict the winner of this year's Shingo Ryukogo Taisho, a well-known Japanese award for new words and buzzwords. Metsu came first again, with 27.7 percent. Dopagaki was second, at 12.8 percent. The organizers usually announce the nominees in early November and the winner in early December. JK Lab said it plans to check its members' guesses against the real results.

メンバーは、新しい言葉や流行語を選ぶ有名な賞「新語・流行語大賞」の今年の大賞も予想しました。ここでも「滅」が27.7％で1位でした。2位はドパガキで、12.8％でした。この賞では、ふつう11月の初めに候補の言葉が、12月の初めに大賞が発表されます。JKラボは、発表のあとに、メンバーの予想と実際の結果を答え合わせする予定だとしています。
