流行は英語で何て言う？女子高生96人の調査、約7割が「流行ってるから」買ったり試したり

A new survey asked 96 high school girls in Japan about trends. About 72 percent said they had bought, tried or used something because it was popular. The survey was done by JK Lab, a group run by the company nowWnow.

新しい調査で、日本の女子高生96人に流行についてたずねました。約72％が、流行っているからという理由で、何かを買ったり、試したり、使ったりしたことがあると答えました。調査をしたのは、nowWnow という会社が運営する「JKラボ」です。

The girls were asked what was popular around them. Malatang soup came first, with 25 percent. Squishy toys and the brand Mellojoy were tied for second. Mellojoy makes soft squishy toys.

女子高生たちは、自分の周りで何が流行っているかを聞かれました。1位は麻辣湯（マーラータン）で、25％でした。スクイーズと、メロジョイというブランドが同じ数で2位でした。メロジョイは、やわらかいスクイーズを作っているブランドです。

More than half of the girls said they noticed trends on social media. They often saw them on apps like TikTok and Instagram. About 21 percent said it was because their friends had or did those things.

半分より多い女子高生が、SNSで流行に気づくと答えました。TikTok やインスタグラムなどのアプリで、よく目にしていました。約21％は、友だちがそれを持っていたり、やっていたりするからだと答えました。

The girls also named things they think will be popular soon. Food was the most common type of answer. Their ideas included bagels, roasted sweet potatoes and balloon skirts.

女子高生たちは、これから流行ると思うものもあげました。いちばん多かったのは、食べ物の答えでした。答えの中には、ベーグル、焼きいも、バルーンスカートがありました。

About seven in 10 high school girls in a small Japanese survey said they had bought, tried or used something because it was trending. The exact figure was 71.9 percent. The survey was carried out by JK Lab, a media and research group for high school girls run by the company nowWnow. It asked 96 of its members from October 5 to 8 and released the results on October 28.

日本の小さな調査で、女子高生の約10人に7人が、流行っているからという理由で何かを買ったり、試したり、使ったりしたことがあると答えました。正確な数字は71.9％でした。調査をしたのは、nowWnow という会社が運営する、女子高生のメディアと調査の組織「JKラボ」です。10月5日から8日にメンバー96人にたずね、10月28日に結果を発表しました。

When asked what was popular around them, 25 percent of the girls chose malatang soup. Squishy toys and Mellojoy, a brand of soft squishy toys, tied for second at 16.7 percent each.

周りで流行っているものを聞かれると、25％が麻辣湯（マーラータン）を選びました。スクイーズと、やわらかいスクイーズのブランドであるメロジョイが、それぞれ16.7％で2位に並びました。

The order changed when the girls were asked to pick the single biggest trend right now. Mellojoy came first, but only 12.5 percent of the girls chose it. Malatang was third, at 8.3 percent.

「いちばん流行っていると思うものを1つ」と聞かれると、順位が変わりました。1位はメロジョイでしたが、選んだのは12.5％だけでした。麻辣湯は3位で、8.3％でした。

Social media played the largest role in how the girls noticed trends. About 54 percent said they felt something was trending because they often saw it on TikTok, Instagram or other apps. About 21 percent pointed to friends who had the item or did the activity. Only 11.5 percent said it was because the trend was a topic at school.

流行に気づくきっかけで、いちばん大きな役割を果たしたのはSNSでした。約54％が、TikTok やインスタグラムなどのアプリでよく見るから流行っていると感じる、と答えました。約21％は、友だちがそれを持っていたり、やっていたりすることをあげました。学校で話題になるからと答えたのは、11.5％だけでした。

For the next big trend, food was the most common type of answer, at about 21 percent. The answers included bagels, roasted sweet potatoes, balloon skirts and checked knitwear. About 8 percent picked Heisei-era retro items and other nostalgic things. The results come from 96 members of one group, not from a national sample.

次に流行るものとしては、食べ物の答えがいちばん多く、約21％でした。答えには、ベーグル、焼きいも、バルーンスカート、チェックのニットがありました。約8％は、平成レトロや、そのほかのなつかしいものを選びました。この結果は1つの組織のメンバー96人の答えで、全国の女子高生から無作為に選んだ人たちの答えではありません。
