A new ice age may have started about 2,000 years ago, a new study says. But warming caused by humans seems to have stopped it. The study was published in the journal Science on October 22.
Scientists studied the Barnes Ice Cap in northern Canada. An ice cap is a large, thick sheet of ice on land. This one is all that is left of a huge ice sheet from long ago.
About 2,000 years ago, the ice cap started to grow again. Its growth continued until the late 1950s. Then, from the 1960s, more ice melted in summer than formed in winter.
As the ice got smaller, old plants that had been under it appeared. The team checked the age of these plants. This showed when the ice had covered each place.
The scientists say greenhouse gases from human activities may have warmed Earth. That may have stopped the ice from growing. For about 2.6 million years, Earth has gone back and forth between ice ages and warmer times.

Earth may have started sliding into a new ice age about 2,000 years ago, only for human-caused warming to stop it, according to a study published in the journal Science on October 22. The research was led by Nicolás Young, a scientist at Columbia University in the United States.
The team focused on the Barnes Ice Cap on Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. This ice cap is about the size of Delaware in the U.S. It is the last remaining piece of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which spread over close to 30 percent of North America about 20,000 years ago.
After shrinking for a long time, the ice cap began to grow again about 2,000 years ago. It kept expanding until the late 1950s. Starting in the 1960s, however, warmer summers melted more ice than winter snow could replace. The researchers say the growth may have been the start of a new glacial period, and that greenhouse gas emissions may have reversed it.
To build this timeline, the team dated mosses that had been buried under the ice and were exposed as it retreated. Because the ice cap is frozen to the rock beneath it, it preserved the plants instead of crushing them. The scientists also measured a type of beryllium that builds up in rock after it is exposed to the open air.
For about 2.6 million years, Earth has switched back and forth between cold glacial periods and warmer interglacial periods. Earth left its most recent glacial period about 11,700 years ago. Shaun Marcott, a scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who was not part of the study, wrote that future carbon emissions will help decide how many glacial cycles are skipped.
