Human Warming May Have Stopped the Next Ice Age
1Earth may have started sliding into a new ice age about 2,000 years ago, only for human-caused warming to stop it, according to a study published in the journal Science on October 22. The research was led by Nicolás Young, a scientist at Columbia University in the United States.
2The team focused on the Barnes Ice Cap on Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. This ice cap is about the size of Delaware in the U.S. It is the last remaining piece of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which spread over close to 30 percent of North America about 20,000 years ago.
3After shrinking for a long time, the ice cap began to grow again about 2,000 years ago. It kept expanding until the late 1950s. Starting in the 1960s, however, warmer summers melted more ice than winter snow could replace. The researchers say the growth may have been the start of a new glacial period, and that greenhouse gas emissions may have reversed it.
4To build this timeline, the team dated mosses that had been buried under the ice and were exposed as it retreated. Because the ice cap is frozen to the rock beneath it, it preserved the plants instead of crushing them. The scientists also measured a type of beryllium that builds up in rock after it is exposed to the open air.
5For about 2.6 million years, Earth has switched back and forth between cold glacial periods and warmer interglacial periods. Earth left its most recent glacial period about 11,700 years ago. Shaun Marcott, a scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who was not part of the study, wrote that future carbon emissions will help decide how many glacial cycles are skipped.

本文の the team dated mosses that had been buried under the ice は、「(氷が後退して出てくる)前から、氷の下にうもれていたコケ」。
