Teens who ate more fruit were less likely to show signs of depression, a study has found. Any kind of fruit counted.
Researchers at the University of Sydney studied 6,537 students from 71 schools. The schools were in three Australian states. The students answered a survey once a year from Year 7 to Year 10. Their average age at the start was between 12 and 13.
For each extra serving of fruit a day, the risk of depression was about 13 percent lower. The risk of anxiety was about 7 percent lower. Students who had more sugary drinks, such as soft drinks and sports drinks, had a higher risk. This link was stronger in boys.
The study shows a link, not a cause. The lead researcher said the study does not mean an apple can keep depression away. On average, the students ate two to two and a half servings of fruit a day.

Australian teenagers who ate more fruit were less likely to develop signs of depression and anxiety over three years, a study of more than 6,500 students has found. A team led by researchers at the University of Sydney published the results in the journal Child and Adolescent Mental Health. The university announced the findings on Oct. 19.
The data came from Health4Life, a study involving 71 secondary schools in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. The 6,537 students were surveyed once a year from Year 7 to Year 10, and their average age at the start was between 12 and 13. They reported how many servings of fruit, vegetables and sugar-sweetened drinks they usually had in a day.
To check whether diet came before the symptoms, the researchers left out students whose depression or anxiety symptoms were already high at the start. They also took into account physical activity, age, sex and socioeconomic status.
For every extra daily serving of any kind of fruit, students were about 13 percent less likely to develop depression symptoms. For anxiety symptoms, the figure was about 7 percent. Sugar-sweetened drinks, such as soft drinks, cordials and sports drinks, showed the opposite pattern. Students who drank more of them faced a higher risk of both conditions, and the link was stronger in boys, especially for anxiety.
The study found a link between diet and mental health, not cause and effect. Lead author Lily Davidson said this does not mean an apple can stop depression or that soft drinks cause anxiety, because mental health is much more complex. She said teens start choosing more of their own food and drinks in high school, when many mental health problems also begin. Senior author Katrina Champion said making healthy food easier to get and cheaper for families moves the focus away from simply telling teens to eat better. On average, the students ate two to two and a half servings of fruit a day.
