Teens Who Eat More Fruit Less Likely to Develop Depression Symptoms, Study Finds
1Australian teenagers who ate more fruit were less likely to develop signs of depression and anxiety over three years, a study of more than 6,500 students has found. A team led by researchers at the University of Sydney published the results in the journal Child and Adolescent Mental Health. The university announced the findings on Oct. 19.
2The data came from Health4Life, a study involving 71 secondary schools in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. The 6,537 students were surveyed once a year from Year 7 to Year 10, and their average age at the start was between 12 and 13. They reported how many servings of fruit, vegetables and sugar-sweetened drinks they usually had in a day.
3To check whether diet came before the symptoms, the researchers left out students whose depression or anxiety symptoms were already high at the start. They also took into account physical activity, age, sex and socioeconomic status.
4For every extra daily serving of any kind of fruit, students were about 13 percent less likely to develop depression symptoms. For anxiety symptoms, the figure was about 7 percent. Sugar-sweetened drinks, such as soft drinks, cordials and sports drinks, showed the opposite pattern. Students who drank more of them faced a higher risk of both conditions, and the link was stronger in boys, especially for anxiety.
5The study found a link between diet and mental health, not cause and effect. Lead author Lily Davidson said this does not mean an apple can stop depression or that soft drinks cause anxiety, because mental health is much more complex. She said teens start choosing more of their own food and drinks in high school, when many mental health problems also begin. Senior author Katrina Champion said making healthy food easier to get and cheaper for families moves the focus away from simply telling teens to eat better. On average, the students ate two to two and a half servings of fruit a day.

文法ポイント:be likely to ~(~しそうだ)/ be less likely to ~(~しにくい)
本文の teenagers who ate more fruit were less likely to develop signs of depression は「果物を多く食べる10代は、うつの症状が出にくかった」。
