A slang word about short videos came second in a survey of trend-loving high school students. The word is dopagaki. About 14 percent of the students chose it.

ショート動画に関係するスラングが、流行に敏感な高校生への調査で2位になりました。その言葉は「ドパガキ」です。生徒の約14％がこの言葉を選びました。

Dopagaki is a short form of dopamine chudoku no gaki. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain. In this word, chudoku means being hooked on something. Gaki is a rough word for a kid.

ドパガキは「ドーパミン中毒のガキ」を短くした言葉です。ドーパミンは、脳の中にある物質です。この言葉の中の「中毒」は、何かにはまってやめられないことです。「ガキ」は、子どもを指す乱暴な言葉です。

Students use the word for people who get hooked on short videos. These people also find it hard to focus on one thing. Students use it as a joke about themselves or their friends.

生徒たちは、ショート動画にはまってやめられない人にこの言葉を使います。そういう人は、1つのことに集中するのも苦手です。生徒たちは、自分や友だちのことを言う冗談として使っています。

The word is not a medical term. The top word in the survey was meroi, with about 20 percent.

A slang word that pokes fun at short attention spans has ranked second in a survey of trend-conscious Japanese high school students. The word dopagaki was chosen by 14.0 percent of the students. Shibuya Trend Research, a survey service run by a Tokyo company, released the results on Oct. 2.

集中が長く続かないことをからかうスラングが、流行に敏感な日本の高校生への調査で2位に入りました。その言葉は「ドパガキ」で、生徒の14.0％が選びました。東京の会社が運営する調査サービス「渋谷トレンドリサーチ」が、10月2日に結果を発表しました。

The service asked 200 trend-conscious high school students aged 15 to 18 about autumn trends. The online survey was carried out from Sept. 15 to Sept. 21, and students could choose more than one answer. The top buzzword was meroi, a word that praises how someone acts and who they are, as well as how they look. Meroi was picked by 20.3 percent of the students. The word frenemy came third with 7.7 percent.

この調査サービスは、流行に敏感な15〜18歳の高校生200人に秋のトレンドについてたずねました。ネット調査は9月15日から21日に行われ、生徒は答えを複数選ぶことができました。流行語の1位は「メロい」で、見た目だけでなく、ふるまいや人柄までほめる言葉です。メロいは、生徒の20.3％が選びました。3位は7.7％の「フレネミー」でした。

Dopagaki is a shortened form of dopamine chudoku no gaki, which roughly means a kid hooked on dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that is linked to feeling rewarded. High school students use the word for people who are absorbed in short videos, social media or online games and cannot stay focused for long.

Shibuya Trend Research said the word seems to be used among high school students as a funny nickname rather than as a gloomy way of putting themselves down. Still, gaki is a rude word for a child, so the term can sound insulting, for example when a teacher uses it about a student. It is internet slang, not a medical diagnosis.

渋谷トレンドリサーチによると、この言葉は高校生のあいだで、自分を悪く言うというより、おもしろいあだ名として使われているようです。それでも「ガキ」は子どもを指す失礼な言葉なので、たとえば先生が生徒に使うと、悪口に聞こえることがあります。これはネットのスラングで、医学的な診断名ではありません。
