She wrote about an old name for sweet potatoes. In the Edo period, some shops called them "jusanri," or "13 ri." A ri is an old unit of distance. One ri is about four kilometers.
首相が書いたのは、さつまいもの昔の呼び名のことでした。江戸時代、さつまいもを「十三里」と呼ぶお店がありました。「里」は、昔のきょりの単位です。1里は、およそ4キロメートルです。
The number 13 comes from a word game. The word for chestnut, kuri, sounds like "9 ri." The word yori, or "than," sounds like "4 ri." Nine plus four is 13, so the name meant "tastier than chestnuts."
13という数は、ことばあそびから来ています。クリ(栗)ということばは「九里」と同じ音です。「〜より」の「より」は「四里」と同じ音です。9たす4は13。だからこの名前は「栗よりおいしい」という意味だったのです。
Today, Japanese sweet potatoes are popular in other countries, too. In 2025, Japan exported about 9,000 tons of them. It was a record. Thailand bought the most. Baked sweet potatoes are sold in shops and convenience stores there.

A ri is an old Japanese unit of distance, equal to about 3.9 kilometers. The name is a play on words. Kuri, the word for chestnut, can be written with characters meaning "nine ri," and yori, meaning "than," sounds like "four ri." Nine plus four makes 13, so the name meant that sweet potatoes were tastier than chestnuts. Earlier, sellers had used the name "eight and a half ri" to say the taste was close to that of chestnuts.
「里」は日本の昔のきょりの単位で、およそ3.9キロメートルです。この名前は、ことばあそび(しゃれ)です。栗を表す「くり」は「九里」と書くことができ、「〜より」の「より」は「四里」と同じ音です。9たす4で13。つまりこの名前は、さつまいもは栗よりおいしい、という意味だったのです。それより前には、味が栗に近いという意味で「八里半」という名前も使われていました。
Another theory links the name to Kawagoe, a town known for its sweet potatoes, which was about 13 ri from the center of Edo. In 1987, a group of sweet potato fans in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, chose October 13 as Sweet Potato Day. October is also the main harvest season.
別の説では、この名前は、さつまいもの産地として知られた川越が、江戸の中心からおよそ十三里だったことにつながっているとされます。1987年、埼玉県川越市のさつまいも好きの会が、10月13日を「さつまいもの日」に決めました。10月は、さつまいもがたくさんとれる季節でもあります。
Sweet potatoes first came from the tropical parts of the Americas. They reached Japan in the 17th century through the Ryukyu Islands, now Okinawa, and spread to the Satsuma area, now Kagoshima, which gave them their Japanese name, satsumaimo. In the 1730s, the scholar Aoki Konyo tested growing them near Edo to help people survive famines.
さつまいもは、もともとアメリカ大陸の熱帯の地域から来たものです。17世紀に琉球(いまの沖縄)を通って日本に伝わり、薩摩(いまの鹿児島)に広がりました。「さつまいも」という名前はここから来ています。1730年代には、学者の青木昆陽が、ききんから人々を救うために、江戸の近くでさつまいもを試しに育てました。
Customs data show that Japan exported 9,079 tons of sweet potatoes in 2025, worth about 4.1 billion yen. Both figures were records and more than five times the levels of 2015. Thailand was the largest buyer, at about 3,700 tons, followed by Hong Kong and Singapore. A report by Moji Customs, citing businesses, said baked sweet potatoes made from Japanese sweet potatoes have become a regular product in Thailand. From January to June 2026, exports rose about 23 percent from a year earlier, to 4,586 tons.
税関の統計によると、2025年に日本はさつまいもを9079トン輸出し、その金額はおよそ41億円でした。量も金額も過去最高で、2015年の5倍以上でした。いちばん多く買ったのはタイで約3700トン、次が香港、その次がシンガポールでした。門司税関の報告は、業界の話として、日本産のさつまいもを使った焼き芋が、タイで定番の商品になっていると伝えています。2026年1月から6月の輸出は、前の年の同じ時期より約23%増えて、4586トンでした。
