Why Sweet Potatoes Are Called "13 Ri"
1October 13 is Sweet Potato Day in Japan. On that day this year, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi wrote about sweet potatoes on X. Her post got more than 10,000 likes.
2She wrote about an old name for sweet potatoes. In the Edo period, some shops called them "jusanri," or "13 ri." A ri is an old unit of distance. One ri is about four kilometers.
3The number 13 comes from a word game. The word for chestnut, kuri, sounds like "9 ri." The word yori, or "than," sounds like "4 ri." Nine plus four is 13, so the name meant "tastier than chestnuts."
4Today, Japanese sweet potatoes are popular in other countries, too. In 2025, Japan exported about 9,000 tons of them. It was a record. Thailand bought the most. Baked sweet potatoes are sold in shops and convenience stores there.

110月13日は、日本の「さつまいもの日」です。今年のその日、高市早苗首相がXでさつまいもについて書きました。その投稿には1万をこえる「いいね」がつきました。
2首相が書いたのは、さつまいもの昔の呼び名のことでした。江戸時代、さつまいもを「十三里」と呼ぶお店がありました。「里」は、昔のきょりの単位です。1里は、およそ4キロメートルです。
313という数は、ことばあそびから来ています。クリ（栗）ということばは「九里」と同じ音です。「〜より」の「より」は「四里」と同じ音です。9たす4は13。だからこの名前は「栗よりおいしい」という意味だったのです。
4いま、日本のさつまいもは外国でも人気です。2025年、日本はさつまいもをおよそ9000トン輸出しました。これは過去最高でした。いちばん多く買ったのはタイです。タイでは、焼き芋がお店やコンビニで売られています。
文法ポイント：比較級（〜er than ...）
2つをくらべて「…より〜だ」と言うときは、形容詞に er をつけて than を続ける。本文の tastier than chestnuts は「栗よりおいしい」。tasty のように y で終わる語は y を i にかえて er をつける（tasty → tastier）。
