"13 Ri": The Old Joke Behind Sweet Potato Day
1Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi posted about sweet potatoes on X on October 13, which is Sweet Potato Day in Japan. She wrote that some baked sweet potato sellers in the Edo period called the vegetable "jusanri," or "13 ri." The post had more than 10,000 likes by that evening.
2A ri is an old Japanese unit of distance, equal to about 3.9 kilometers. The name is a play on words. Kuri, the word for chestnut, can be written with characters meaning "nine ri," and yori, meaning "than," sounds like "four ri." Nine plus four makes 13, so the name meant that sweet potatoes were tastier than chestnuts. Earlier, sellers had used the name "eight and a half ri" to say the taste was close to that of chestnuts.
3Another theory links the name to Kawagoe, a town known for its sweet potatoes, which was about 13 ri from the center of Edo. In 1987, a group of sweet potato fans in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, chose October 13 as Sweet Potato Day. October is also the main harvest season.
4Sweet potatoes first came from the tropical parts of the Americas. They reached Japan in the 17th century through the Ryukyu Islands, now Okinawa, and spread to the Satsuma area, now Kagoshima, which gave them their Japanese name, satsumaimo. In the 1730s, the scholar Aoki Konyo tested growing them near Edo to help people survive famines.
5Customs data show that Japan exported 9,079 tons of sweet potatoes in 2025, worth about 4.1 billion yen. Both figures were records and more than five times the levels of 2015. Thailand was the largest buyer, at about 3,700 tons, followed by Hong Kong and Singapore. A report by Moji Customs, citing businesses, said baked sweet potatoes made from Japanese sweet potatoes have become a regular product in Thailand. From January to June 2026, exports rose about 23 percent from a year earlier, to 4,586 tons.
