The Story

Perpetuum mobile" is a humorous piece for orchestra written by Johann Strauss II in 1861. The Latin title means "something that moves forever." A stream of fast notes never stops, and it is passed from instrument to instrument like a baton in a relay race. Strauss himself gave it the subtitle "A Musical Joke."

Pieces of this type are full of quick notes at the same speed from start to finish. Usually they are show pieces for a soloist, but Strauss gave the job to the whole orchestra. Each time the tune comes back, different instruments play it, so the colors of the sound keep changing. That is the fun of it.

The piece is built so that it can be repeated again and again. In concerts, the conductor often turns to the audience at the end, says "und so weiter" ("and so on"), and stops the music. It has been played many times at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert, where it has often made the audience laugh.

This music never stops! Fast notes run and run. Many instruments play the same tune, one after another. At the end, the conductor often says "and so on" and stops. People laugh at this joke.

Because the piece can repeat forever, a favorite way to end it is for the conductor to say "und so weiter" ("and so on") and simply stop. The joke is: "It goes on forever, but let's stop here for today."

"Perpetuum mobile" is also the name for a dream machine that runs forever without fuel. Many people tried to invent one, but the laws of physics show that it is impossible. In music, however, it came true.

Many pieces race along without stopping, such as Paganini's "Moto perpetuo" for violin and the last movement of Weber's Piano Sonata No. 1. Most of them show off a soloist's amazing skill, but Strauss turned the idea into a relay for the whole orchestra.

The same fast melody is handed from the violins to the woodwinds and then to the brass. If you listen and ask, "Which instrument is playing now?", it becomes a fun way to learn the sounds of the orchestra.
