The Story

Manhattan Beach is a march Sousa wrote in 1893. Manhattan Beach was a popular seaside resort in Brooklyn, New York, and Sousa's band played there in the summer. The march was written in honor of the resort and dedicated to its owner, Austin Corbin.

In 1892, Sousa had left the U.S. Marine Band and formed his own band. Around the same time, the famous bandleader Patrick Gilmore died, and Sousa's band began playing at the resort after him. This march is said to have been first played during the band's season at the resort.

In the last part, a melody starts very softly, grows louder, and then fades away. It sounds like a band coming closer and marching past, or like waves rolling in and out. Unusually, the march does not have the short final 'stinger' note that many marches end with.

This march is about a beach in New York. Sousa's band played there in summer. Near the end, the music gets soft, then loud, then soft again. It sounds like a band walking by. Can you hear it?

Sousa said this march was based on an earlier piece from the start of his career, when he conducted the play The Phoenix. It was first called 'The Bludso March,' after a character in the show. It was not written for the play itself but was dedicated to the actor Milton Nobles.

Many marches end with a short final 'bang.' In English, this note is called a 'stinger.' But this march does not have one. It is an unusual ending, even among Sousa's marches.

Austin Corbin, to whom the march is dedicated, was a banker and railroad executive who developed Manhattan Beach as a resort. Live music by a popular band was a big attraction for the resort, and Sousa's march helped spread its name.

In the days before recorded music was common, hearing a popular band live at a seaside resort was a great pleasure for New Yorkers. Sousa's band played many summer concerts at Manhattan Beach, and this march keeps the memory of those days alive.
