行進曲「エル・カピタン」

「エル・カピタン」は、「マーチ王」と呼ばれたアメリカの作曲家ジョン・フィリップ・スーザが、1896年に書いた行進曲です。同じ年に初演された自作のオペレッタ（歌と芝居の楽しい音楽劇）「エル・カピタン」のメロディーをもとに作られました。明るく元気で、今も吹奏楽団の人気曲です。El Capitan is a march written in 1896 by John Philip Sousa, the American composer known as the March King. It was made from melodies in his own operetta El Capitan, a light, comic musical play first performed that same year. It is bright and lively, and bands still love to play it.

オペレッタの舞台は16世紀、スペインが支配していたペルー。反乱軍をおそれた総督（王の代理）が、反乱のリーダー「エル・カピタン」に変装して、騒動を巻き起こすコメディです。1896年4月にボストンで初演され、ニューヨークのブロードウェイでも112回上演される大ヒットとなり、スーザの舞台作品でいちばんの成功作になりました。The operetta is set in 16th-century Peru under Spanish rule. In this comedy, a viceroy who fears the rebels disguises himself as their leader, El Capitan, and causes all kinds of trouble. It opened in Boston in April 1896 and ran for 112 performances on Broadway in New York. It became Sousa's most successful stage work.

行進曲は、8分の6拍子の部分と4分の2拍子の部分が入れかわる、めずらしい形をしています。1898年の米西戦争のとき、デューイ提督の軍艦オリンピア号の楽隊がこの曲を演奏しながらマニラへ向けて出航したと伝えられ、スーザにとっても思い入れのある曲になったと言われています。The march has an unusual form that switches between parts in 6/8 time and parts in 2/4 time. It is said that during the Spanish-American War in 1898, the band on Admiral Dewey's ship Olympia played this march as the fleet sailed toward Manila. Sousa is said to have felt a special attachment to the piece because of this story.
