Sports et divertissements is a set of small piano pieces that Satie wrote in 1914. It begins with an 'Unappetizing Chorale', followed by 20 pieces about games and sports, such as the swing, hunting, sea bathing, golf, tennis and fireworks. Every piece is very short, and the score includes short, funny texts written by Satie himself.
The pieces were part of a luxury art book planned by Lucien Vogel, a publisher of fashion magazines. The book combined drawings by the artist Charles Martin with Satie's music and words. Satie wrote out the score by hand in beautiful calligraphy, with notes in black ink and staves in red ink, and it was printed just as he wrote it.
However, the First World War began, and the book was delayed for years. It finally came out in 1923, in only 900 numbered copies. After the war, Martin made new drawings for it. The first public performance was given in 1922 by the pianist Marcelle Meyer. Today this mix of music, pictures and words is seen as a treasure of 20th-century art.
This is a book of very short piano pieces. Most of the pieces are about a sport or a game, like golf, tennis or fishing. There are pictures and funny words in the book, too. One piece, the tango, has no end. You can play it again and again forever!

There is a famous story: Stravinsky was asked first but said the fee was too low. Then Satie was asked, said the fee was too high, and only agreed after it was reduced! But this may be a legend, and one researcher thinks the real story was a more ordinary talk about money.
About the opening 'Unappetizing Chorale', Satie wrote that he had put into it everything he knew about boredom, and he dedicated it 'to those who do not like me.' This twisted sense of humor was Satie's trademark.
The 'Tango (perpetual)' has repeat signs that tell you to keep playing it forever. In his text, Satie calls the tango 'the Devil's dance'. In 1914 the Archbishop of Paris had banned the tango, and Satie was probably poking fun at that.
It looks as if the music was written to match the pictures. But research suggests that Satie may not have seen Martin's drawings while composing. How closely the music matches the picture changes from piece to piece, and 'Golf' is an especially close match. Also, the drawings in the book were new ones made after the war. It is a strange kind of teamwork!
