The Elephant" is the fifth piece in Saint-Saëns's "The Carnival of the Animals." Over an oom-pah-pah piano accompaniment, the low, heavy double bass slowly dances a waltz. You can almost see a big elephant taking heavy steps. It is a very funny piece.
In fact, this piece secretly borrows famous music by other composers. One is the "Dance of the Sylphs" from Berlioz's "The Damnation of Faust." The other is the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Both are fairy music, as light as feathers. Saint-Saëns's joke is to give them to the heavy double bass.
The Carnival of the Animals" was written in 1886 for a private concert around carnival time. Saint-Saëns did not allow it to be published in his lifetime, but after it came out in 1922, it became very popular. "The Elephant" is especially loved by double bass players, because their instrument, which usually supports the orchestra from the back, gets to be the star.
An elephant dances a waltz! A big, low string instrument plays the elephant. The music is slow and heavy. But the melody comes from fairy music. It is a big joke!

In this piece you hear the melody of Berlioz's "Dance of the Sylphs," written for air spirits floating gently through the sky. When an elephant dances to it, anyone who knows the original can't help laughing.
The Scherzo from Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" also makes an appearance. It is music for the mischievous fairies in Shakespeare's play. Giving the lightest music to the heaviest animal is a perfect upside-down joke.
The double bass is the biggest and lowest string instrument in the orchestra, and it usually supports everyone with low notes. "The Elephant" is known as one of the few famous pieces where the double bass gets to be the solo star.
The suite has 14 pieces in all. After "The Elephant" come hopping "Kangaroos," and then "Aquarium." With one animal after another, the suite is like a musical zoo.
