The Story

This is the overture to Rossini's opera "La gazza ladra" (The Thieving Magpie), first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1817. It has a march-like opening that starts with a snare drum roll, light and bouncy melodies, and the famous "Rossini crescendo," where a phrase repeats as the music grows louder and louder. It is packed with everything people love about Rossini.

The heroine of the opera is Ninetta, a young servant in a wealthy home. When a silver spoon goes missing, she is accused of stealing it and is even put on trial. But the real thief is a magpie that carried the spoon off to its nest. In the end, the mystery is solved and Ninetta is saved. The story is based on a French play.

When "La gazza ladra" premiered in 1817, Rossini was only 25. Earlier that same year, in January, his "La Cenerentola" (Cinderella) had premiered in Rome. The full opera is not performed very often today, but the overture is still loved around the world as a concert favorite and as music in films and on TV.

This music opens an opera. It begins with drums. In the story, a young woman is in trouble. People think she took a silver spoon. But a bird took it! The bird is a magpie.

According to a letter said to be by Rossini himself, he wrote this overture on the day of the premiere while locked in the theater. Guards threw each finished page out of the window to the copyists waiting below. It is a typically funny Rossini story, and no one knows how much of it is true.

This overture is unusual because it begins with a snare drum roll. The score calls for two snare drums, and the military-march opening grabs the listener at once. For an opera overture of that time, it was a very bold way to begin.

There is a legend that the French play behind the opera was based on a real case, in which an innocent servant was punished for silver that a magpie had stolen. However, it is not clear whether such a case really happened.

Part 1 of Haruki Murakami's novel "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" is titled "The Thieving Magpie." The story begins with the hero boiling spaghetti in his kitchen while listening to this overture on the radio.
