Une barque sur l'océan (A Boat on the Ocean) is the third piece in Ravel's piano set Miroirs. It shows a small boat on the wide sea, rocking on gentle waves and sometimes almost swallowed by huge swells. Both hands play rolling broken chords, and from a single piano come sparkling spray and the deep sound of the ocean.
Miroirs was written in 1904–1905, and each of its five pieces was dedicated to a member of Les Apaches, Ravel's circle of artist friends. This one is dedicated to the painter Paul Sordes. Water music was one of Ravel's specialties. The water sounds that began in his earlier piano piece Jeux d'eau grow here into a much bigger ocean.
In 1906, Ravel's friend Ricardo Viñes gave the premiere of Miroirs. That same year, Ravel arranged this piece for orchestra, and it was performed the next year, but it is said not to have been well received. Ravel never published the orchestral version in his lifetime. Today both the piano and orchestral versions are played.
This piano piece is about a small boat on the sea. The notes go up and down like waves. Sometimes the waves are small. Sometimes they are very big. Close your eyes, and you can see the ocean.

Among the five pieces of Miroirs, this is the longest. If the others are small paintings, this one is a huge seascape. It uses the piano from its lowest notes to its highest to show the height and depth of the waves. It takes both strength and focus to play.
After its premiere, Ravel withdrew his own orchestral version, and the score was not published until the middle of the 20th century, after his death. Even Ravel, called the magician of the orchestra for works like Boléro, had pieces that did not turn out as he wished.
Ciboure, where Ravel was born, is a port town in the Basque region, facing the Atlantic. His family moved to Paris soon after he was born, but as an adult he spent summers by the sea there. He even wrote his Piano Trio in the neighboring seaside town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Ravel wrote several masterpieces about water: Jeux d'eau (1901), Une barque sur l'océan, and 'Ondine' (the water spirit) from Gaspard de la nuit. Flowing water, waves, drops… Ravel was a master at showing the movement of water with fast, delicate notes on the piano.
