The Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major is a concerto starring the bassoon, a low woodwind instrument. Mozart finished it in Salzburg in 1774, when he was eighteen. The bassoon is made of a long tube folded in half. In the orchestra it usually supports the music from below, but in this piece it races from high notes to low notes.
This is the earliest of Mozart's surviving concertos for a wind instrument. Some say he wrote other bassoon concertos, but this is the only one that survives. We do not know for sure who it was for. There is a well-known story that Baron von Dürnitz ordered it, but the two men seem to have met only after the piece was finished, so the story is doubtful.
Today it is one of the best-known concertos for the bassoon, and often the first one people think of. It is often used as a test piece when professional orchestras hold auditions for bassoon players. In this lovable work you can enjoy both young Mozart's brightness and the bassoon's funny, warm, singing voice.
The bassoon is a long, low wind instrument. Usually it plays in the background. In this piece, it is the star! Mozart wrote it when he was eighteen. Bassoon players still play it in many auditions.

Some people believe Mozart wrote other bassoon concertos. But this is the only one that has survived as a sure work by Mozart. If others really existed, perhaps they are still sleeping on some old shelf.
The melody of the slow second movement is often said to sound like the beginning of the Countess's aria 'Porgi, amor' in The Marriage of Figaro, written twelve years later. Maybe the seed of that famous aria was already in the young Mozart.
Because of its bouncy and funny low sounds, the bassoon is sometimes called the clown of the orchestra. In this concerto, it jumps from high notes down to very low notes, which can make you smile. But in the slow movement, it also sings beautifully.
In auditions for bassoon players in professional orchestras, this concerto is often a required piece. It sounds light and easy, but it has fast passages and big jumps that show every mistake. For bassoon players, it is a lifelong companion.
