ソラース ― メキシコのセレナード

「ソラース」は、「ラグタイム王」と呼ばれたアメリカの作曲家スコット・ジョプリンが1909年に出版したピアノ曲です。題名は英語で「なぐさめ」という意味。副題は「メキシコのセレナード」で、はずむような元気なラグとはちがい、ゆったりとした、少しさびしげなメロディーが流れます。Solace is a piano piece published in 1909 by Scott Joplin, the American composer known as the King of Ragtime. The word solace means comfort. Its subtitle is 'A Mexican Serenade'. Unlike his bouncy, lively rags, it has a slow and slightly lonely melody.

ジョプリンは1907年ごろにニューヨークへうつり、オペラ「トゥリーモニシャ」の作曲にも力を注いでいました。「ソラース」の左手は、キューバ生まれの踊り「ハバネラ」やタンゴに近い、ゆれるようなリズムをきざみます。いくつかのメロディーをつないでいくラグの形は守りながら、雰囲気はがらりとちがう、ジョプリンの作品の中でもめずらしい曲です。Around 1907, Joplin moved to New York, where he also worked hard on his opera Treemonisha. In Solace, the left hand plays a swaying rhythm close to the habanera, a dance from Cuba, or the tango. The piece keeps the rag form of linking several melodies together, but its mood is completely different. It is a rare kind of piece among Joplin's works.

ジョプリンは1917年に亡くなり、その音楽はしばらく忘れられていきました。ところが1970年代、ラグタイムがふたたび注目されます。1973年の映画「スティング」では、マーヴィン・ハムリッシュが編曲したジョプリンの曲が使われ、「ソラース」もそのひとつとして流れました。今ではジョプリンの「隠れた名曲」として愛されています。Joplin died in 1917, and his music was forgotten for many years. But in the 1970s, people became interested in ragtime again. The 1973 film The Sting used Joplin's music arranged by Marvin Hamlisch, and Solace was one of the pieces heard in it. Today it is loved as one of Joplin's hidden gems.
