パイナップル・ラグ

出版されたときの題名は「Pine Apple Rag」と2語に分けて書かれていました。じつは英語の pineapple は、もともと「松（pine）の実（apple）」、つまり松ぼっくりを指す言葉でした。形が似ていたので、のちにあの南国のくだものの名前になったのです。

When it was published, the title was written as two words: 'Pine Apple Rag.' In fact, the English word 'pineapple' first meant the 'fruit' of a pine tree, that is, a pine cone. Because the tropical fruit looked similar, the name later moved to it.

1910年、ジョー・スナイダーが歌詞をつけた歌のバージョンが出版されました。ジョプリンのラグはふつうピアノだけで楽しむものですが、この曲は歌としても売り出されたのです。人気のメロディーには、言葉をのせたくなるものなのですね。

In 1910, a song version with lyrics by Joe Snyder was published. Joplin's rags are usually enjoyed on piano alone, but this one was also sold as a song. People always want to put words to a popular tune.

映画『スティング』のサウンドトラック盤では、この曲が「グラディオラス・ラグ」とのメドレーと、単独の演奏の2回登場します。音楽を担当したマーヴィン・ハムリッシュは、この映画でアカデミー賞の編曲賞を受賞しました。

On the soundtrack album of The Sting, this piece appears twice: in a medley with Gladiolus Rag and on its own. Marvin Hamlisch, who adapted the music, won an Academy Award for his score for the film.

「ラグタイム」という名前は、リズムがずれてぎざぎざになった（ragged）時間（time）、という意味から来たと言われています。右手のメロディーがわざと拍からずれる、はずんだ感じを表した名前です。この曲を聴くと、その「ぎざぎざ」の楽しさがよくわかります。
