Maple Leaf Rag is a ragtime piece for piano published by Scott Joplin in 1899. With its bouncy rhythm and one lively melody after another, it is known as one of the defining pieces of ragtime. Its great success led people to call Joplin the 'King of Ragtime'.
The title is said to come from the Maple Leaf Club, a social club in Sedalia, Missouri, where Joplin played the piano. The sheet music was published by a local publisher, John Stark, and Joplin signed a contract to receive one cent for every copy sold. This is said to have been an unusual deal for an African American composer at the time.
The sheet music kept selling for many years and played a big part in spreading ragtime across America. Many pianists copied it and used it as a model for writing rags. A piano roll (a record for a player piano) that Joplin made in 1916 also survives. It is not a sound recording, but it is an important clue to how he played.
This is a famous ragtime piece for piano. It came out in 1899. Its name may come from a club in a small American town, but no one knows for sure. Many people bought the music and played it at home. After this, people called Joplin 'the King of Ragtime.'

Joplin signed a contract with the publisher Stark to get one cent for every copy of the sheet music sold. It may sound small, but because the music kept selling, it gave Joplin an income for many years. In an age when songs were often bought cheaply and outright, it was a far-sighted deal.
The Maple Leaf Club was a social club in the small town of Sedalia, Missouri, where Joplin is said to have played the piano. The idea that the title came from this club is well known, but there is no clear proof, and the name may have come from somewhere else.
In 1916 Joplin recorded this piece on a piano roll for a player piano, a system that stores the notes as holes punched in paper. It is not a sound recording, and rolls could be edited later, so it is not an exact copy of his playing. Still, it is a valuable clue.
Even after the ragtime era ended, jazz musicians loved Maple Leaf Rag and played it in many styles. Recordings by Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet are well known.
