The gladiolus is a plant with sword-shaped leaves and many bright flowers in summer. Joplin often named his pieces after plants and flowers, and in the same year he also published Rose Leaf Rag.

The first strain also uses rising minor-key arpeggios, just like the earlier rag.

Joseph W. Stern & Co. was one of the Tin Pan Alley firms, the popular music publishers of New York. It shows that Joplin, who started with publishers in St. Louis, had moved into the center of the big-city music business.

映画『スティング』のサウンドトラック盤には、「パイナップル・ラグ」から「グラディオラス・ラグ」へ続くメドレーが収められています。ニューヨーク時代に出版された2曲が、60年以上たって1つにつながったのです。

The soundtrack album of The Sting includes a medley that goes from Pineapple Rag into Gladiolus Rag. Two pieces published in Joplin's New York years were joined together more than 60 years later.
