The Second Suite in F for Military Band is a suite for winds and percussion that Holst wrote in 1911. It is full of old English folk songs and dance tunes. In four movements, it moves from a lively march to a gentle song and a blacksmith's work song, showing many different moods.
In 1909, Holst wrote piano parts for folk songs collected in Hampshire, in southern England, and he used some of those songs in this suite. The first movement is a march using tunes such as Swansea Town. The second is a Song Without Words based on I'll Love My Love. The third is the Song of the Blacksmith, and the fourth is a Fantasia on the Dargason.
The suite was published in 1922. After that, it was played by bands all over the world and, along with the First Suite, became a key work in the band repertoire. The last movement was later rewritten for strings as the finale of St Paul's Suite. The composer Gordon Jacob also arranged the whole suite for orchestra.
This is a famous piece for a wind band. It uses old English folk songs. In one part, a player hits a real anvil. An anvil is a heavy iron block for a blacksmith. The music sounds like a blacksmith at work.

The score of the third movement, Song of the Blacksmith, includes an anvil, the iron block a blacksmith hammers metal on. Its ringing clang, together with sharp rhythms in the brass, brings a blacksmith's workshop to life.
Song of the Blacksmith is in F major, but it ends on an unexpected D major chord. The bright surprise makes listeners go, 'Huh?' It is one of Holst's little musical tricks.
Dargason and Greensleeves in the last movement do not come from the folk song collection. They are tunes from The Dancing Master, a dance book first published in England in 1651. Melodies more than 300 years old were reborn for wind band.
When Holst was young, he played the trombone in orchestras and in bands at seaside towns. Because he knew how wind players feel, he could write music in which every band instrument shines.
