Mars is the first movement of Holst's suite The Planets. Its subtitle is 'the Bringer of War'. A rare rhythm with five beats in each bar repeats like a machine. Over this rhythm, the brass cry out fiercely, and the music grows heavier and more violent.
Mars was the first movement of the suite that Holst wrote, in 1914. The First World War began in August that year, but the piece is thought to have been finished before then. Even so, people who heard it later felt it predicted the horror of modern warfare.
At the start, the string players tap the strings with the wood of their bows, a technique called col legno, to make a dry, eerie rhythm. The Planets was first played in 1918 for an invited audience, and the complete suite had its first public performance in 1920. The powerful sound of Mars is said to have greatly influenced later film music.
Mars is the first part of The Planets. It is music about war. The rhythm has five beats, not four. The music is loud and scary. Many movie composers like this kind of sound.「火星」は「惑星」の最初の曲です。

Mars is thought to have been finished before the First World War began in August 1914. Holst did not write it after seeing a real war. Yet to later listeners, it sounded as if it had predicted the age of tanks and machine guns.
The heavy rhythm and brass sounds of Mars are often said to resemble later music for science fiction and action films. Some people point out similarities with music from Star Wars, for example. It often comes up when people talk about film music.
In Mars, the tenor tuba, an instrument close to the euphonium and rare in orchestras, plays a solo melody that stands out. It is a well-known example of an instrument familiar from wind bands playing a big role in a famous orchestral piece.
Holst's family had foreign ancestors, and his original name was Gustav von Holst. During the First World War, when German-sounding names were unpopular, he dropped the 'von' around 1918 and became simply Gustav Holst.
