The Story

Oh! Susanna' is a bright, cheerful song that Stephen Foster wrote when he was about 20. It begins, 'I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee,' and tells of a trip to see a girl named Susanna. The words are full of fun nonsense, like 'It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry.'

The beat comes from the polka, a dance that had just arrived in America from Europe and was very popular. The song spread through minstrel shows, where white performers painted their faces black to sing and dance. Some of the original words are now seen as racist, so today those parts are usually changed or left out.

The earliest known performance took place in September 1847 at an ice cream parlor in Pittsburgh. After the sheet music came out in 1848, it became a huge hit. It is said to have sold more than 100,000 copies, but Foster was paid only 100 dollars. During the California Gold Rush of 1849, people heading west to look for gold sang it with new words, and it became like a theme song for their journey.

This is a happy song from America. A man travels with a banjo to see Susanna. The words are funny. He says, 'It rained all night, but it was dry!' Many people sang it on their way to find gold.

The sheet music is said to have sold over 100,000 copies, far more than any American song before it. But Foster received only 100 dollars. Other people even published it under their own names, so it was printed at least 21 times between 1848 and 1851.

After this hit made other people rich, Foster made a deal with a New York publisher to get money for every copy sold. Because of this, he is often called the first full-time professional songwriter in America, someone who tried to live only by writing songs.

In 1849, after gold was found in California, people rushed there from all over the country, hoping to get rich. They sang a new version with words like 'Oh, California, that's the land for me!' The song became the unofficial theme song of the 'Forty-Niners'.

The tune is still used around the world. Mixue, an ice cream and tea chain from China, uses the melody with new words as its theme song. Funny, isn't it? The song was first sung in an ice cream parlor more than 170 years ago.
