The Story

Humoresque No. 7 is the seventh of eight piano pieces that Dvořák wrote in 1894. A humoresque is a light, whimsical piece with a touch of humor. Its friendly melody bounces along in a dotted rhythm, and it is one of Dvořák's best-known works.

Dvořák wrote the set in Vysoká, Bohemia, during a summer break from his work in America. He is said to have used ideas from a sketchbook he had filled in America. In the middle section, the music turns to a minor key and becomes a little sad, before the bright tune returns.

The piece quickly became popular and was arranged for violin, cello, orchestra, and many other instruments. The violin versions, including one by the great violinist Fritz Kreisler, were played all over the world and became well known through recordings. It is still a familiar piece for anyone learning the piano or violin.

This is a short piano piece. The rhythm is bouncy, like skipping. The tune is happy and a little funny. Many people also play it on the violin. It is one of the most famous short pieces in the world.

Some arrangements combine Humoresque with Stephen Foster's song 'Old Folks at Home' ('Swanee River'). They are carefully adapted so that the two melodies can be heard together, and they are sometimes played as a fun surprise at concerts.

'Humor' once meant the body fluids that people believed shaped a person's mood. In music, a humoresque is not really a joke. It is a short piece with a whimsical, imaginative character. Schumann also wrote a Humoreske.

No. 7 is in G-flat major, a key with six flats. The score can look hard to read, but on the piano it uses many black keys, which can feel comfortable under the hand. Playing the original, your fingers seem to roll over the keys.

There are eight Humoresques in the set, but No. 7 is almost the only one known worldwide. The other seven are also full of simple Bohemian charm. If you like No. 7, try listening to the whole set.
