Minstrels, written in 1910, is the twelfth and final piece in Debussy's first book of Preludes. Snappy chords, sudden stops and silly little tunes come one after another, like a comedian on stage telling joke after joke. At the top of the score, Debussy asks the pianist to play 'nervously and with humor.'
Minstrels were performers in minstrel shows, a kind of entertainment that was hugely popular in 19th-century America, mixing songs, dances and comedy. White performers darkened their faces and made fun of Black people, and today these shows are seen as racist. Debussy loved the new rhythms arriving from America, such as the cakewalk. In this piece you can hear sounds like a strummed banjo and low thumps like a drum.
Book 1 was published in 1910. In the Preludes, each title is printed in small letters at the end of the piece. This is often seen as a way to keep players from being guided by the title too soon. In 1914, Debussy arranged this piece for violin and piano himself. He also recorded it on a piano roll, a paper roll with holes for a self-playing piano, so we can still hear the composer's own performance.
This is a funny piano piece. It is about performers in a show with songs, dances and jokes. The piano sounds like a banjo and a drum. The music stops and starts like a comedian. The composer played it on a special piano roll, and we can still hear it today!

Debussy wrote 24 preludes in all, but Minstrels is the only one he arranged for other instruments himself. In 1914 he made a version for violin and piano and changed some of the notes. So even pianists find it interesting as 'another Minstrels.'
Debussy recorded 14 of his own works on piano rolls for the German Welte company, and Minstrels is one of them. The recordings are thought to date from 1912 or 1913. More than 100 years later, the composer's own fingers still come back to life in sound.
In the Preludes, the title is not printed at the top but at the end, like '(...Minstrels).' This is thought to keep players and listeners from being tied to a picture too early. You hear the music first, then check your guess: 'Oh, it was the comedians!'
Debussy loved the rhythm of the cakewalk, a dance born in America. Shortly before this piece, he wrote Golliwogg's Cakewalk in Children's Corner for his daughter. He was one of the first classical composers to bring the bouncy rhythms of the cakewalk into concert music.
