弦楽五重奏曲 ホ長調 より「メヌエット」

「ボッケリーニのメヌエット」は、イタリア生まれの作曲家でチェロの名手ルイジ・ボッケリーニが1771年に書いた「弦楽五重奏曲 ホ長調」の第3楽章です。バイオリン2本、ビオラ1本、チェロ2本という珍しい組み合わせの曲で、このメヌエットだけが独立して、世界中で親しまれるようになりました。'Boccherini's Minuet' is the third movement of a String Quintet in E major, written in 1771 by Luigi Boccherini, an Italian composer and a brilliant cellist. The quintet is for an unusual group: two violins, one viola and two cellos. This minuet became so popular that it is now often played on its own.

ボッケリーニはスペインのマドリードに移り住み、国王の弟ドン・ルイス親王に仕えて、たくさんの室内楽を書きました。弦楽五重奏曲だけで100曲以上もあります。メヌエットは、ヨーロッパの宮廷で人気のあった3拍子の上品なおどりの音楽です。この曲では、ほかの楽器が軽く伴奏する上で、第1バイオリンが優雅なメロディーを歌います。Boccherini moved to Madrid in Spain and worked for Prince Luis, the younger brother of the king. There he wrote a huge amount of chamber music, including more than 100 string quintets. A minuet is an elegant dance in three beats that was popular at European courts. In this one, the first violin sings a graceful tune while the other instruments accompany it lightly.

楽譜が出版されたのは1775年ですが、このメヌエットが広く有名になったのは、ずっと後のことです。1955年のイギリス映画『マダムと泥棒』では、泥棒たちが音楽家のふりをする場面でこの曲が使われ、さらに有名になりました。いまでは、いろいろな楽器用に編曲されて演奏されています。The quintet was published in 1775, but the minuet became widely famous much later. In the 1955 British film The Ladykillers, a gang of thieves pretend to be musicians, and this minuet is the music they 'play', which made it even more famous. Today it is arranged for many different instruments.
