This Turkish March is one piece from The Ruins of Athens, music Beethoven wrote for a play in 1811. It is a short march of about two minutes. It starts very softly, gets louder and louder, and then fades away again, as if a band is coming from far away, passing in front of you, and marching off.
The Ruins of Athens is a play by August von Kotzebue. It was written for the opening of a new theater in Pest, Hungary, now part of Budapest. In those days, the music of Ottoman Turkish military bands was very popular in Europe, and many composers wrote "Turkish-style" music using bass drum, cymbals, and triangle.
In fact, Beethoven had already used this melody in 1809, as the theme of his Six Variations for piano, Op. 76. The play was first staged in February 1812. Today the full music for the play is rarely performed, but this Turkish March is loved around the world, often in arrangements for piano and other instruments.
This is a short and lively march. It starts very quietly. Then it gets loud, and then quiet again. It sounds like a band walking by. Mozart also wrote a famous Turkish March.

In Japan, many people think of Mozart when they hear "Turkish March": the third movement of his Piano Sonata No. 11. Beethoven's march is a different piece. Both are examples of the "Turkish style" that was all the rage at the time.
The melody of this march is the same as the theme of his piano variations, Op. 76, from 1809. Beethoven also reused a tune from his own ballet in the "Eroica" Symphony. When he liked a melody, he sometimes used it again.
The music of Ottoman military bands, called mehter, with their booming drums and crashing cymbals, became a craze in 18th-century Europe. Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven all used this "Turkish" sound in their music.
In The Ruins of Athens, the goddess Minerva wakes up after sleeping for 2,000 years and is saddened to find Athens under Ottoman rule. The Turkish March is music for one scene in this play.
