National Emblem is a march by the American composer Edwin Eugene Bagley. He composed it in 1902 and published it in 1906. It is one of the true standards of American march music and has appeared in eleven published editions. Bagley is said to have written it while traveling by train on a concert tour with his band.
The first strain uses the first twelve notes of 'The Star-Spangled Banner,' the U.S. national anthem. But the anthem is in triple time, and here the tune is changed to duple time, so it is 'disguised' and hard to notice at first. After four short repeated chords, the low instruments proudly play a melody that recalls the anthem.
When the March King Sousa chose the five most effective street marches ever written, four were his own, and the fifth was National Emblem. Today, the U.S. military still uses its trio as ceremonial music when an official party enters. The conductor Frederick Fennell called it 'as perfect a march as a march can be.'
This is an American march. A famous story says the composer did not like the ending. He threw the music away! But his friends saved it and played it. Now it is one of the most famous marches in America.

According to a famous legend, Bagley was unhappy with the ending, so he threw the score into a trash bin. His bandmates are said to have secretly pulled it out and rehearsed it in the baggage car. Just before the next concert, they told him they were going to play it, and he was very surprised, the story says.
This piece became one of America's greatest marches, but Bagley sold the copyright for only 25 dollars. So he never became rich from his big hit. The fate of this masterpiece was not kind to the composer's wallet.
In 1960, a rock arrangement of this march was released as 'National City,' and it reached No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. The record was credited to the Joiner (Arkansas) Junior High School Band.
During World War I, Sousa led a Navy band at Liberty bond drives, campaigns to raise money for the war. One of the marches he chose for them was National Emblem. Even though it was not his own, he knew a great march when he heard one.
