The Christmas Oratorio is a large work made up of six cantatas. They were first performed in Leipzig churches on six feast days, from Christmas Day 1734 to Epiphany on January 6, 1735, the day that celebrates the visit of the wise men. With choir, soloists and orchestra, it tells the story from the birth of Jesus to the visits of the shepherds and the wise men.
In fact, much of the music was borrowed from secular cantatas Bach had recently written to celebrate the royal family, with new words. For example, the opening chorus, 'Shout for joy, exult', comes from a birthday cantata for the Electress of Saxony (BWV 214), which began 'Sound, you drums! Ring out, trumpets!' That is why the piece opens with a solo on the timpani.
The story is told by a tenor narrator, the Evangelist, who sings words from the Gospels. Between these passages come arias that express feelings, and chorales, hymns the congregation knew well. Performed complete, it lasts well over two hours. Today, all or part of it is performed every Christmas season, and in Germany it is an essential part of the holidays.
This is a long Christmas piece in six parts. It starts with loud drums! Then the choir sings, 'Shout for joy!' It tells the story of baby Jesus. Bach used music from his older pieces in it.

In Part II, the alto aria 'Sleep, my beloved' is a gentle lullaby for the baby Jesus. But it first appeared in a cantata about the Greek hero Hercules (BWV 213), where the character Pleasure sings it to lull the hero to sleep. The same melody is used in a completely different scene.
In a soprano aria in Part IV, a second soprano acts as an 'echo', answering the first singer's questions with 'No' and 'Yes'. This was also reworked from the echo aria in the Hercules cantata. It is a fun way to make an echo in music.
A chorale in Part I and the final chorale of Part VI use a melody famous as a Passion hymn, the same one that appears many times in the St Matthew Passion. Many think there is a deep meaning in placing a melody linked to the cross at the beginning and end of a work celebrating Jesus's birth.
Today it is often performed in one evening, but originally one part was performed in church on each of six feast days. Churchgoers heard the story bit by bit over about two weeks. It was like a TV series where you can't wait for the next episode.
