Life Story

Emmanuel Chabrier was born in 1841 in Ambert, a town in the Auvergne region of central France. His father was a lawyer. He began music lessons at six, studying with a refugee from Spain and later with a Polish musician. Music fascinated him, but his father wanted him to become a lawyer.

The family moved to Paris in 1856. Chabrier studied law and in 1861 joined the Ministry of the Interior as a civil servant. For the next nineteen years he worked in the office by day and studied piano and composition in his spare time. In Paris he became close friends with the painter Édouard Manet and the poet Paul Verlaine, and spent his free hours among artists. In 1877 his comic opera L'étoile won him wider attention.

His life changed in March 1880, when he heard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde in Munich. He is said to have been moved to tears, and later that year he left the ministry to compose full-time. In 1882 he travelled in Spain, and from the folk tunes he heard there he created the orchestral rhapsody España. When it was premiered in 1883 it was a sensation, and it became his best-known work.

He went on to write the serious opera Gwendoline and the comic opera Le roi malgré lui, but bad luck followed him: the manager of the theatre staging Gwendoline went bankrupt, and the Opéra-Comique burned down during the first run of Le roi malgré lui. In his last years he suffered from a serious illness, and he died in Paris in 1894, aged 53. Yet his bright, witty music strongly influenced Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc, and Mahler is reported to have called España 'the beginnings of modern music'.

Emmanuel Chabrier was born in France in 1841. He worked in a government office for 19 years. He wrote music in his free time. It is said that an opera by Wagner made him cry. Then he left his job to make music. His piece España is full of happy Spanish rhythms.

Chabrier was an early collector of Impressionist paintings. He even owned his friend Manet's masterpiece A Bar at the Folies-Bergère. It was sold after his death, in 1896, and now hangs in a London gallery.

In March 1880 Chabrier heard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde for the first time in Munich and is said to have wept. That same year he left the ministry where he had worked for nineteen years and, at 39, became a full-time composer.

Chabrier played the piano with enormous energy. The painter Renoir's wife remembered one occasion when his playing broke several piano strings. Yet the composer Vincent d'Indy wrote that, despite his clumsy manner, he was a master of delicacy.

In 1887 his comic opera Le roi malgré lui opened at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, but the theatre burned down after the third performance. Earlier, Gwendoline had closed after only two performances because the theatre manager went bankrupt.

After the huge success of España, Émile Waldteufel, famous for The Skaters' Waltz, turned its melodies into a waltz called España in 1886. The lively Spanish rhythms were reborn as an elegant dance.

Although Wagner had moved him so deeply, Chabrier also wrote a comic quadrille, a lively dance, using themes from Tristan und Isolde. Poulenc later found it hilarious. Respect and laughter went hand in hand for Chabrier.
