旧奈良監獄は、明治政府が整備した「五大監獄」の中で、ただ一つ全体の配置が残る建物です。赤レンガ造りで、中心から放射状に5本の建物がのびる形をしています。1908年に完成し、2017年3月まで刑務所として使われました（最後は奈良少年刑務所）。閉庁直前の2017年2月に国の重要文化財に指定されています。その後、星野リゾートが活用を引き継ぎ、2026年4月27日に博物館として開館しました。

The old Nara Prison is the only one of the Meiji government's "five great prisons" whose layout still survives. It's made of red brick, with five wings spreading out from the center. It was used as a prison until March 2017, last as a juvenile prison, and became an Important Cultural Property in February 2017. The museum opened on April 27, 2026.
館内では、独房が並ぶ棟をそのまま公開し、建築の特徴や刑務所の歴史、受刑者の毎日のくらしを展示しています。「美しき監獄からの問いかけ」というテーマで、ただ珍しい建物を見るだけでなく、ルールや自由について考えさせる内容が話題になりました。日経トレンディによると、チケットの完売が続き、開館から約5カ月で15万人が訪れています。

Visitors can walk through a wing of single cells and see exhibits on architecture, prison history, and daily life inside. The theme asks questions about rules and freedom. Nikkei Trendy says tickets kept selling out, and 150,000 people came in about five months.
2026年6月25日には同じ敷地にホテル「星のや奈良監獄」も開業し、米ナショナル ジオグラフィックの「Best of the World 2026: 20 Best New Hotels」に、日本のホテルとして唯一選ばれました。12月からは夜の特別公開も予定されています。日経トレンディ「2026年ヒット商品ベスト30」では20位。奈良公園周辺だけでなく、北側の「きたまち」エリアに人を呼ぶ新しい名所になりました。
