Should countries that launch satellites be responsible for removing space debris?

I strongly believe that countries which launch satellites should take responsibility for removing space debris. First, it is only fair that those who create a problem should solve it. On Earth, factories that pollute rivers are expected to pay for the cleanup, and the same principle should apply to orbit. Most of the tens of thousands of pieces of debris larger than a softball came from the rockets and satellites of a small number of spacefaring nations, so it would be unfair to make other countries share the burden. Second, clear responsibility would encourage better technology. If launching countries knew they had to clean up, they would design satellites that can be safely removed at the end of their missions. The Japanese company Astroscale has already tested ways to capture objects in orbit, which shows that removal is possible. For these reasons, launching countries should be held responsible for keeping space clean.

I think countries that launch satellites should clean up space debris. First, they made the debris, so they should remove it. This is the same as cleaning up after a picnic. Second, if countries must pay for cleaning, they will build safer satellites that make less debris. Some companies in Japan are already working on ways to catch old satellites. Space is shared by everyone, so the countries that use it most should take care of it.

  • Debris removal is extremely expensive, so making it a legal duty could stop developing countries from starting their own space programs.
  • Debris is a global problem that affects every user of space, so an international fund shared by all countries may work better than blaming individual nations.

space debris
take responsibility for ~
spacefaring nation
share the burden
at the end of one's mission
be held responsible for ~
