Even though large asteroid impacts are extremely rare, governments should spend money on planetary defense. The main reason is that the possible damage is enormous. Scientists widely believe that an asteroid impact contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. Even a much smaller object could destroy a city, and in 2013 a meteor that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, injured more than a thousand people. Preparing for such an event is similar to buying insurance: the cost is small compared with the possible loss. Another reason is that defense is actually possible. In 2022, NASA's DART spacecraft deliberately crashed into a small asteroid and successfully changed its orbit. This test proved that humans can protect Earth if dangerous objects are found early enough.
