I firmly believe that space agencies should make their data freely available. To begin with, open data leads to more discoveries. Space missions collect enormous amounts of information, far more than any single team can study. When the data is shared, researchers around the world, and even amateur astronomers and students, can analyze it and find things the original team missed. Volunteers have discovered new planets and asteroids in this way. In addition, open data creates economic and social value. After the United States made images from its Landsat satellites free in 2008, their use grew dramatically in fields such as farming, forestry and city planning. Most space missions are paid for by taxpayers, so it is fair that the public should benefit directly from the results. Some sensitive information may need protection, but in general, sharing space data is the best way to maximize its value.
