A pink stone from the Sahara Desert is actually a rock from Mars, scientists say. They found that it formed over 4.1 billion years ago. It is among the oldest Mars rocks ever found.
The stone was picked up in the desert in 2022. It weighs about 800 grams. That is a little more than one and a half 500-milliliter bottles of water. Its name, Teghaza 001, comes from a salt flat in Mali.
A crash on Mars long ago sent the rock flying into space. Later, it fell to Earth. NASA says about 435 meteorites from Mars are known.
A university team in the U.S. studied the oxygen in the stone. It matched other Mars rocks. Then a team led by a NASA scientist found zircon crystals inside it. These crystals can show how old a rock is.
Water on Mars also changed the rock about 4.1 billion years ago. So the rock itself probably formed even earlier. The journal Science published the team's report on October 29.

A rose-colored stone that turned up in the Sahara in 2022 is a fragment of Mars more than 4.1 billion years old, scientists have found. NASA, which funded the research, announced on October 29 that the meteorite ranks among the oldest pieces of Mars known on Earth. That day, the journal Science carried the team's paper on the rock.
Called Teghaza 001 after a salt flat in Mali, the meteorite weighs about 800 grams. NASA counts about 435 known meteorites from Mars. Each of them was thrown off the planet by an impact and later landed on Earth.
A team at the University of New Mexico first showed that the stone came from Mars by measuring its oxygen isotopes. These isotopes work like chemical fingerprints that help tell planets apart. The new study was led by Yang Liu, a scientist at a NASA laboratory in California. Her team found zircon crystals in the rock, and these crystals hold clues to when a rock formed.
Francois Tissot of Caltech helped with a new dating method developed by his team. It needed only a chip of the rock no bigger than a fingernail, and it looked at single mineral grains. Some other methods dissolve the entire sample, but this one leaves rare rocks like this available for later research.
The dating showed that water on Mars changed the rock about 4.1 billion years ago. That suggests the rock itself formed even earlier. Mars is thought to have formed about 4.5 billion years ago. A separate paper on the water in the meteorite was published in Science Advances in June.
The rock's mix of minerals is similar to rocks seen by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in the southern highlands, an area covered in craters. The team listed 13 places on Mars that could match the meteorite. However, NASA said the rock's exact birthplace on Mars can never be known.
