Rose-Colored Meteorite Is One of the Oldest Pieces of Mars
1A rose-colored stone that turned up in the Sahara in 2022 is a fragment of Mars more than 4.1 billion years old, scientists have found. NASA, which funded the research, announced on October 29 that the meteorite ranks among the oldest pieces of Mars known on Earth. That day, the journal Science carried the team's paper on the rock.
2Called Teghaza 001 after a salt flat in Mali, the meteorite weighs about 800 grams. NASA counts about 435 known meteorites from Mars. Each of them was thrown off the planet by an impact and later landed on Earth.
3A team at the University of New Mexico first showed that the stone came from Mars by measuring its oxygen isotopes. These isotopes work like chemical fingerprints that help tell planets apart. The new study was led by Yang Liu, a scientist at a NASA laboratory in California. Her team found zircon crystals in the rock, and these crystals hold clues to when a rock formed.
4Francois Tissot of Caltech helped with a new dating method developed by his team. It needed only a chip of the rock no bigger than a fingernail, and it looked at single mineral grains. Some other methods dissolve the entire sample, but this one leaves rare rocks like this available for later research.
5The dating showed that water on Mars changed the rock about 4.1 billion years ago. That suggests the rock itself formed even earlier. Mars is thought to have formed about 4.5 billion years ago. A separate paper on the water in the meteorite was published in Science Advances in June.
6The rock's mix of minerals is similar to rocks seen by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in the southern highlands, an area covered in craters. The team listed 13 places on Mars that could match the meteorite. However, NASA said the rock's exact birthplace on Mars can never be known.

本文の a new dating method developed by his team(彼のチームによって開発された新しい年代の測り方)や、rocks seen by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter(探査機に見つけられた岩)がその例。
