The Story

The Snow Is Dancing is the fourth piece in Children's Corner, a piano suite by Debussy. From beginning to end, quick little notes continue almost without a break, painting snowflakes that keep swirling outside the window. In the cold, quiet air, there is a touch of loneliness, too. It is a wonderful winter piece.

Children's Corner is a suite of six pieces that Debussy wrote for his little daughter, Chouchou, and published in 1908. It paints the world around a child: toys, dolls, snow and more. In this piece, a slow melody floats up over repeating quick notes. You may feel the heart of a child at the window, watching the snow and waiting for a day to play outside.

In 1974, the Japanese composer Isao Tomita released an album of Debussy's music played on synthesizers. Its English title, Snowflakes Are Dancing, was taken from this piece. The album caused a stir in America too, and it was nominated for Grammy Awards. A piano piece from more than 60 years earlier was reborn in electronic sound.

This is a piano piece by Debussy. It is about snow. Small notes fall and fall, like snowflakes. The music is quiet and a little lonely. Can you see the snow outside the window?

Isao Tomita's 1974 synthesizer album was released in Japan as 'Tsuki no Hikari' (Clair de lune), and in English as Snowflakes Are Dancing. It was the same album, but a different piece gave it its name in each place. It is said to be a landmark album in the history of synthesizer music.

In this piece, quick sixteenth notes go on almost without a break from beginning to end. The pianist has to keep the fingertips light and every note even. It looks like a cute little piece, but for piano students it is actually quite a challenge.

Children's Corner features a child bored with practice, a toy elephant, a serenade for a doll, snow, a little shepherd and a doll dancing a cakewalk. Among its many lively pieces, The Snow Is Dancing is a cool, quiet winter scene.

Later, in his Préludes, Book 1 (1910), Debussy wrote another snow piece called Footprints in the Snow. It is a very quiet and sad piece, like footprints left in a lonely snowy landscape. Try comparing the 'dancing snow' seen through a child's eyes with 'Footprints in the Snow' seen with an adult's heart.
