Why do people notice an accent? A researcher in Austria studied 34 British people who moved to Austria as adults. They read sentences in English, their first language, and in German. Listeners said how native they sounded.
In German, listeners noticed single sounds, like the "r". In English, the speakers sounded native most of the time. But some listeners noticed a flat or strange rise and fall in their voices.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
第1文 Why do people notice an accent? がテーマで、聞き手が何に気づいたかを説明しているので D。
Q2. What did listeners notice in the speakers' German?
In German, listeners noticed single sounds, like the "r". とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "first language" means ...
English, their first language とあり、イギリス人にとっての英語=子どものころ最初に覚えた言語(母語)なので C。
When we hear someone speak, how do we decide whether they are a native speaker? A researcher at the University of Graz studied 34 British people who had moved to Austria as adults and had lived there for about 13 years on average. They read sentences in English and German, and 141 listeners rated how native they sounded.
Their German was judged as non-native, mostly because of individual sounds such as the "r". Their English sounded native in most cases, but slightly less native than that of people living in Britain. Here, listeners mainly pointed to intonation and rhythm, such as a flat tone. This slight change in a first language is called L1 attrition.

What exactly makes speech sound non-native? A study in the Journal of Second Language Pronunciation by a researcher at the University of Graz addressed this question from an unusual angle. It examined 34 British-born adults who had migrated to Austria at around age 32 and had lived there for roughly 13 years. Recordings of them reading sentences in both English and German, along with recordings of monolingual speakers, were rated for nativeness by 79 English-speaking and 62 German-speaking listeners, who also explained their judgments in writing.
Unsurprisingly, the bilinguals' German was rated as non-native, and about 76% of the comments concerned individual sounds, most often an English-like "r". Their native English, meanwhile, was judged slightly less native than that of speakers in Britain, possibly a sign of first-language attrition, and about 65% of comments here focused on intonation and rhythm. The likely explanation is that once individual sounds are accurate, subtler differences in melody and timing stand out. However, the study used read sentences rather than natural conversation and involved only one language pair, so it may not apply to Japanese learners of English.

Q2. According to the passage, why did intonation and rhythm stand out in the speakers' English?
once individual sounds are accurate, subtler differences in melody and timing stand out とあるので A。
Q3. Why might the results not apply to Japanese learners of English?
最終文 used read sentences ... and involved only one language pair, so it may not apply to Japanese learners が根拠なので C。
