たとえば、「Why did the student eat his homework?(なぜその生徒は宿題を食べた?)」に「Because the teacher said it was a piece of cake.(先生が“朝飯前(a piece of cake)”だと言ったから)」と返すようなダジャレ系のジョーク。オチで一瞬つまずき、「cake を2つの意味で読み直す」ことで笑えるわけです(※これは説明用の例で、研究で使われたジョークではありません)。
02同じ英語力の2グループを比べた
比べたのは、同じオチが「ジョークとして」出てくる場合と、「ふつうの自然な答えとして」出てくる場合の脳の反応です。
03「?」は両グループ、「!」は英語漬けの群だけ
結果ははっきり分かれました。
- N400(意味のズレに反応する脳波):両グループとも、ジョークのオチで大きくなった
- P600(読み直し・再解釈に関わる脳波):英語に多く触れる群だけに現れた

Sometimes everyone laughs at an English joke, but you do not. Why? Scientists in China studied 42 university students who learn English. Half of them had many English classes every week. The other half had only a few.
Their English test scores were about the same. When they read English jokes, the brains of both groups noticed something strange. But only the students with many classes showed brain signs of getting the joke.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
英語のジョークを読んだときの学習者の脳の反応を調べた話なので C。
Q2. Which students showed brain signs of getting the joke?
only the students with many classes showed brain signs of getting the joke とあるので D。テストの点は両グループでほぼ同じだった。
Q3. In this passage, "noticed" means ...
notice は「気づく」。something strange に気づいた、という意味なので B。
Why can learners understand every word of a joke but still not find it funny? Researchers in China measured the brain waves of 42 Chinese university students while they read short English jokes. One group majored in English and had 12 to 20 hours of English classes a week. The other group had only 2 to 4 hours. Both groups had similar English test scores.
In both groups, a brain wave called the N400 grew larger at the punchline, which means they noticed that something did not fit. However, only the group with more English exposure showed the P600, a signal linked to rethinking the meaning. The researchers suggest that exposure, not just knowledge, helps learners get jokes.

Q1. What did the researchers measure?
measured the brain waves of 42 Chinese university students while they read short English jokes とあるので A。
Q2. How many hours of English classes did the English majors have each week?
One group majored in English and had 12 to 20 hours of English classes a week. とあるので B。2〜4時間はもう一方のグループ。
Q3. What does the P600 result suggest?
P600(意味の考え直し)は英語に多く触れる群だけに現れ、最終文で exposure ... helps learners get jokes と述べているので D。
Getting a joke takes two steps. The listener first notices that something does not fit, then makes sense of it by reinterpreting what was said. A study in the journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition used event-related potentials, small electrical responses recorded from the brain, to see how far Chinese learners of English get through those steps. Forty-two university students took part.
English majors, with 12 to 20 hours of English classes a week, formed a high-exposure group, and a low-exposure group had only 2 to 4 hours. The two groups had similar vocabulary and entrance exam scores, which makes the comparison fairer. They were formed by major instead of random assignment, though, so motivation may also differ between them, and 42 students is a small sample.
While reading 61 short English jokes, both groups produced a larger N400 at the punchline, a sign that they had spotted the incongruity. Only the high-exposure group went on to show a P600 effect, which is linked to reanalysis, and they also answered more accurately. Only one-liners and riddles were tested, not sarcasm. For these short jokes, the authors conclude, the low-exposure learners could find the joke but not solve it.
